We have long embraced a passionate love for cob art, self expression through the wonderfully moldable natural medium what cob is: this simple yet sophisticated blend of clay, sand and water. In fact, seven years ago, Cheryl and I arrived to our farmstead with this passion in our hearts, only waiting for the right opportunities to put it to creative work and while doing so, learn more and more about the character of the material.
That’s how we have gotten to the partially necessity, partially adventure driven project of restoring the interior of our dining room and kitchen.
Grabbed a piece of charcoal, with the design idea in my head walked to the wall, sketched the plane view contour of the different three dimensional cob features, scratched the wall surface inside of the contour with a stiff scraper for the cob to better key in, made multiple sticky but solid cob mixes and eventually, after multiple months of very intermittent work, came up with the art pieces I share with you below.
With that, we invite you to dip your own hands in cob as well and play, just play with it. Dream up a unique home interior feature and whether it’s subtle or bold, whether it’s only meant to be seen by your eyes or shared with the wide world – create it. You shall have a lot of fun, we promise.
