As a follow-up with my inspiration when rocking in that hammock, wearing my own freshly handcrafted hemp shoes, I managed to get our daughter’s precious healthy feet out of her worn down felt booties (fashioned for cold weather)
– these are ready for the compost now –
and into an all new pair of sandals. Seasonal, yes, but not just any kind of sandals…
Designed and handmade by me, her father, these are hemp rope sandals and – interestingly – created of one continuous piece of rope each, top and bottom included. Eco-minimalism at work!
The project had some lows and downs, when I decided it was best to start all over again. The failed sandal helped us cook and stay warm a cool late spring day…
As far as the final result is concerned, I am so delighted to see her enjoy wearing them even when they are not necessary…
I love listening to the tap-tap sound of her feet when she runs in her rope sandals down the silt covered ruts of our dirt driveway.
I am overjoyed at the thought that her feet and body stay connected to the Earth and its energies that offer us the grounds of good health…
And yes, I am proud to provide her with something of heirloom quality that respects Nature, not rubbing any toxins on the interface between her and her.
Why don’t you do the same? One way or another, whether using hemp canvas, brain/gall tanned organic leather or choosing rope and the tutorial of the all-natural footwear presented right here, I urge you to start providing yourself and your family members with gentle shoes, so finally you too can take light steps.
There is a lot more to hand-making your ecological garments than the physical creation of stitch after cut. It is poetry, it is music composed to nature’s rhythms. It is philosophy, it is unbinding ethics, it is aesthetics – novel, yet so timeless. It means becoming one and inseparable with your microcosm and the greater universe. Try it, see and feel the difference for yourself!
So the one-hemp-rope sandals are finally delivered to my daughter and the know-how of their making to you. Take advantage.
We would be happy to share a photo or two of your sandals following this pattern, right here, on Handcraftedtravellers as further motivation for others.
