As we unbrand our lives and take them back into our own self-reliant hands we have the ability to change the future. We can choose to move forward uncomfortable in our comfortableness – following the same what we already know, or we can move our bodies and fingers in ways unknown and unfamiliar to us in search of a fulfilling life, and a sustainable one at that.
We must resolve to move, not to exercise, but to bend and fold, stretch and treadle, whirl and stir. Stay fit by being active inside and outside the home, don’t let machines work instead of you. Take pleasure in providing for yourself, your family and your community.
In light of a sustainable future consider what it truly means to buy and consume local produce and free-range meat. Consider the possibility of crafting your wardrobe from local natural fibers, invest in the creativity of compostable clothing and the work of nearby artisans, including yourself.
Resolve to move your hands and fingers by picking up healthy habits such as knitting, smithing, crocheting, weaving, turning and sewing. Move your feet to the soothing rhythm of a spinning wheel, twisting fibers into yarn as a byproduct of toning your muscles.
Resolve to cook at home with unprocessed real foods, grow what you can, trade, share and support small farms where the situation allows. Your local environment may be a source of inspiration if you take the time to get out and explore it. If not, perhaps a move in the physical sense is in order.
Resolve to reconnect with nature by walking barefoot on various surfaces, relishing in the textures of the Earth. Inhale fresh air among native trees and get on your hands and knees to explore the local flora and fauna. Listen to the birds chittering, sit and observe patiently while a spider weaves its web, pay close attention to the many critters scrambling, slithering, moving all around you.
Know that the world is alive and that you are not only part of it, but inside of it!
Get involved, do your part by advancing along, grasping new skills as you go. Be the process, the drumming of existence that will inspire future generations. Do not sit idle watching a screen all hours of the day, there are unforeseen dangers lurking in the wires replacing the actual doing and being with technology.
Move to stimulate thoughts, ideas and your sense of well being.
Stretch. Dance. Walk. Move your body and be aware of the power of life. There is no reason to rush, only a great need to slow down and become conscious, once again, of the movement around you.
How are you resolving to move and raise your bodily awareness this year?
