Look closely at nature. It’s beauty is simplicity in finest form. Complexity is the underlying element that makes it all flow, ebb and tide into a wonderful painting – it is what makes a Fukuoka style garden a feast for the eyes.
How can we achieve a similar simplicity in everyday life?
The answer is in us and around us.
Many times we voluntarily make our lives complex. We take on too many meetings, too many ideas, we eat too much food and we repeat all of this day after day pretending that it is good to be busy. When in reality it is good to relax our limbs after a day at work, like a tree standing silent in the moonlight. Let go of the day’s frustrations and connect with the Earth.
Unwind. Take a barefoot walk. Sip herbal tea. Talk with loved ones. Recycle your t.v. that can only stare back. Sit down with a good book and relax!
To do that though, one must not be stressed by the home front. One of the keys to true simplicity is not owning more than what you need. Surround yourself not with cheap replacements (“…if I could only afford more…”), but with items that have an heir of quality, a wooden chair that you are proud of sitting on. A heavy bench and dining room table made of reclaimed hardwoods where you are happy seating guests and lovingly serving them homemade food. Create that level of satisfaction in your own home.
Simplicity in everyday life. It is there, waiting for you. You may need to find it by decluttering, by removing piles of memories from under the bed or stuffed in your closet, but when you find it, the day will erupt with joy!
Freedom is in living life, in sharing, in experiencing, in becoming closer to nature. It is not about accumulating meaningless objects and holding onto the past. It is being in the now with all that you really need – a roof over your head, a warm kitchen, friends or family to share your thoughts and hearty, wholesome, real food on your table.
Fill your days with the treasures of life: a kiss from your child, an embrace from your lover, kind words that tell someone they have made the right choice. Life is beautifully complex, on par with nature for interactions down to a microscopic scale, yet simplicity is everywhere we look.
